Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is an advanced condition in which the gums begin to recede from the teeth to expose the root surface below, common in adults over 40. Some consider this to me a natural part of aging, however in some cases it can be cause by over excessive tooth brushing.  In some cases receding gums can be a sign of a more serious problem which should be discussed with Dr. Lambeth.

In many cases the receding gums are caused by periodontal disease. In most cases it does not cause any pain and may go unnoticed.  Gum disease starts with a buildup of bacteria and plaque buildup on the teeth and gums. When plaque is not removed regularly with at home care and frequent visits to our hygienist it begins to release toxins that eat away at the gum tissue causing them to become irritated and inflamed. As gum disease progresses these bacteria begin to break down the gum tissue causing separation from the tooth, and formation of pockets where more bacteria can hide, and end up causing more damage to the teeth and surrounding tissues.
